Ashlie wants to go to college some place close to home. For some reason she likes her old mother. :-). She said she doesn't necessarily want to live at home but wants to be close enough to visit. I also think seeing Caitlynn and Dalton grow up is a big part of it too.
Jeff, the huge WVU alumni, has been trying to talk her into going to WVU for years. Now I think at least he just wants her to see the campus. And if she can get free football tickets that would just be icing on the cake. Last year we drove around the campus. Ashlie liked the downtown campus but not much of anything else. For one thing it was too big for her. We still think she needs to do an actually visit to the school though.

At any rate, a couple of weeks ago we visited the college practically down the street from us. Ashlie was not impressed. It was way too small and didn't really offer her major, which is early childhood education. Last week we went to Shepherd University which has been her #1 choice for awhile now. Shepherd University is in Shepherdstown, WV which is about 45 minutes from home. For those history buffs, Shepherdstown is just a couple of miles from Sharpsburg which is where the Antietam Battle happened during the civil war. Shepherdstown is a quaint little town that Ashlie fell in love with the first time she saw it. Shepherd University is also known as a teachers college. So going in the University was already scoring high on Ashlie's list.
After the visit Ashlie was pretty excited. Her statement to me was "Why wouldn't I go to this University?" I actually came up with a couple of things she needs to consider and look into but all in all it was a nice campus. And a major civil war battle is right in their backyard!!! Who could deny that?!! We will probably visit a couple more colleges and then visit this one again when the students are in school before she makes her final decision.
The campus consists of two campus sites. The main campus site we went to is all on one street. All of the building look pretty much like this.
Here are the dorms. Ashlie doesn't have to live on campus since we are within 60 miles of the school.
After the visit I wanted to explore around Sharpsburg and another town called Boonsboro. I knew we wouldn't have time to go to Antietam. Well hunger won out and I didn't get to see anything. But I did get these wonderful pictures of the kids.
Corrie wasn't with us since she was at Volleyball practice. Which anymore if Corrie isn't at Marching band practice she is at volleyball practice.
After lunch I took Ashlie to Frederick, MD to meet up with a friend that was going to take her to Maryland to see all of her friends for the day. Austin and I had a couple of hours to kill before we needed to be back and pick Corrie up. We decided on the Civil War Museum of Medicine.
It was pretty cool. Austin really liked it because they had mannequins which really made everything real. The grossest thing was they had some actual bones from people who died in the civil war to show what kind of damage the bullets did. There were a lot of pictures of people with injuries. It was pretty disturbing. 95% of the time body parts were amputated. I had heard that there was no anesthesia but according to what this museum was saying they did have it and used it in 95% of the cases.
We couldn't take pictures but here are a couple I found on the internet
I added a link to their website so you can see a virtual tour. It also has a lot of historical information that we found in the museum.
