A Five hour trip to play frizbee

I haven't had a chance to explore a lot of the history that is around here yet. I do know that George Washington had an office here during either during the French and Indian war or Revolutionary War. Stonewall Jackson did something here and their are several Civil War battlefields around. The most famous is Antietam which is about 40 minutes away and Gettysburg which is about an hour away. The lesser known battles like Cedar Creek and the 3 battles of Winchester are within minutes. I did visit the site of the 3rd battle of Winchester since it is only a couple of minutes away. But the walk was about a five mile walk and it was steaming hot when we went. So we just peeked at the entrance.

This past Saturday we decided take a drive. Our first intention was to go to the park and let the babies swing and the bigger kids play frisbee. But it was way too hot for that. Our drive took us to a town called Front Royal. During the Civil War Stonewall Jackson had a battle here. That is about all the history I know. As we were driving around we found this really cool cemetery. Maybe I need to define "cool". To me "cool" is lots of old tombstones all different sizes. I definitely was not disappointed. As soon as we pulled into the cemetery I saw this big monument with steps going to it.

The monument is in memory of the seven comrades in Mosby's command executed at this spot while POW's during the Civil War. The date was Sept 23, 1864.

We next found this big monument

On Nov 7 1868, the ladies Warren Memorial association was chartered to collect the dead from the Civil War buried in various sites throughout the county and rebury them in this circular lot called Soldier's circle. Of the 286 reburied 90 were identified and buried on the outside circle with their own marble tombstone. The remainder are buried in a common grave in the center.

Ok so you might not find it as "cool" as I did. But just in case you are even just a tiny bit interested here are a few more pictures of the cemetery

After our cemetery visit was slowly headed home going through a couple of small towns. Those towns also offer a lot of Civil War history that I will go back and explore. By 8:00 we finally made it to the park to play. It was finally cool enough to even stand to be outside.

I am disappointed I didn't get a picture of Jeff, Ashlie, Austin, and Corrie playing frisbee. That actually was the whole intent of our afternoon. Oh well, another day.
